A classic by Lope de Vega, brought to the stage with a seemingly figurative approach but charged with strong symbolism. The aim is to convey the feeling of repression experienced by the female characters through the progressive transformation of the space. The house, conceived as a metaphor of confinement, gradually sinks as the play unfolds, as if each act descended one level deeper into a well.
Un clásico de Lope de Vega, llevándolo al escenario con una propuesta aparentemente figurativa pero cargada de simbolismo. El objetivo es transmitir la sensación de represión que viven los personajes femeninos a través de la transformación progresiva del espacio. La casa, concebida como metáfora de encierro, va hundiéndose a medida que avanza la obra, como si cada acto descendiera un nivel más hondo de un pozo.
A rotating system allows the walls to change in each of the three acts, while the floor remains static: chairs and characters pass through the doors from one act to the next without breaking continuity. In the first act, the ceiling progressively closes, reinforcing the idea of oppression. In the second, the sewing room becomes overwhelmed with fabrics falling from above, suffocating the atmosphere. Finally, in the third act, when the action moves to the courtyard or cloister of the house, the scenography turns into a metaphorical prison: the columns gradually move closer together, evoking bars that symbolize the protagonists’ inescapable fate.
Un sistema giratorio permite cambiar los muros en los tres actos, mientras que el suelo permanece fijo: las sillas y personajes atraviesan las puertas de un acto a otro sin perder continuidad. En el primer acto, el techo se va cerrando poco a poco, reforzando la idea de opresión. En el segundo, la sala de labores se invade con telas que caen desde arriba, asfixiando el espacio. Finalmente, en el tercer acto, cuando la acción se traslada al patio o claustro de la casa, la escenografía se transforma en una cárcel metafórica: las columnas se aproximan entre sí, evocando barrotes que simbolizan el destino inevitable de las protagonistas.
